School ‘readiness’ at 1st Friends Nursery

Preparing for “Big School” at 1st Friends Nursery

At 1st Friends Nursery, preparing children for “big school” is a key part of our curriculum. Our Exploring Friends pre-school group provides a busy, exciting environment where children take on more independence. They gradually drop daytime naps, move around between rooms on their own, choose their activities, concentrate for longer periods, eat using cutlery, clear up after themselves, wear pants instead of nappies, and use the toilet independently! All of these activities help build the skills needed for “school readiness” and are part of everyday life in Exploring Friends.

Confident, Capable, School-Ready!

In the Exploring Friends group, typically during the 2-3 terms before children start school, we focus on specific school readiness activities. These include mastering getting changed (buttons, shoes, zips), taster PE lessons, fun activities with numbers and letters, practical life skills, and more activities that help children learn how to sit still! These hands-on experiences help children feel confident and ready for the next step in their educational journey.

We do not generally try and teach the children to ‘read and write’ but if your child is showing interest in reading and writing, we have lots of suitable activities to encourage this and to ensure that they have a fun and positive start to reading and writing.
